Painting accent walls is just the same as painting any ordinary wall. The major difference in painting an accent wall is actually choosing the correct color you want to use to offset your base color. This wall is going to be the center point that your eyes should focus to in the room or area that you’re trying to enhance or create a focal point to. This is a way of drawing attention to a certain feature and make it stand out.

First of all you have to select the wall to paint as an accent wall, these usually are a smallers wall (because if you choose a larger wall or very large wall it loses its effect). Generally walls without any kind of door or window are preferred so as not to break up the color. On the other hand if you have some kind of interesting looking architectural trim work or fireplace or possibly a piece of art that you want to bring attention to this the perfect way to do it.

You should come up with the color scheme that will reflect what you’re trying to do. One idea might be once you’ve decided what tone you want to paint and have have it as your base tone and the one wall that you want to paint to be a darker version of the same color. If you’re looking for even a more dramatic effect you might consider using a complementary color or possibly an opposite one.

Also the shine level and the technique you use painting will also have an effect. Obviously the shine your feature wall is the more it will stand out from the rest of the flat (matte) remaining walls. This feature wall can also be faux finished and textured to even further accent this wall. There are various faux finishes you could do to this wall, very simple basic faux finish to a multilayered complicated design. You can also install a wall covering of your choice instead of painting.

The next thing is to prep the wall and make sure that it has no holes or cracks or some surface imperfections that might make the wall look irregular and uneven or not smooth. You will need a few tools and items to do this with such as, wall plaster and a couple of plastering knives, some fine sandpaper and some good-quality painters tape such as frog tape. Inspector walk carefully looking for any imperfections and fixing them by either plastering in holes or sanding off any high spots. Then carefully lay your painters tape all the way around the perimeter of this wall, watching to ensure that you are placing the tape and a straight even smooth line. Make sure tape is 100% contacting the wall that you’re taping off because if you don’t, the paint will bleed through under the tape which you don’t want.

Now that you have your wall prepared it’s time to paint your accent wall. Some deep accent paint colors can be painted with only 2 coats of paint such as blue or green or brown, these are very strong and don’t need priming. But if you’re going with red or orange or yellow you have to prime with the same shade of gray to get the background at consistent opaqueness.

Now that you have applied a couple of coats and the material has dried and you don’t see through the paint you can now take off the painters tape. You have to be careful removing the tape not to tear into the new paint so you have to figure out at what angle to pull the tape from. Once you’re all done you now have a beautiful featured wall.

These are the steps that we follow at Toronto painters (Hollywood painting) do when we paint an accent wall (featured wall)

Mississauga Carpentry

There are few cosmetic additions that can liven up a room like crown molding. Far too many people choose to leave the tops of the ceilings bare when they could be enjoying a visual and sophisticated treat that can help transform a drab room into a masterpiece.

The type of crown molding you choose for each room depends on four primary factors: your taste, the style of the room, size of the room and the height of the ceilings. You can`t just go and choose molding without first making a plan and doing a little research.

Room Style

Ornate crown molding is generally thought to go along with older, more Victorian homes. This is primarily because crown molding started in the grand mansions of Europe and the South. If the style in your home is more classic, you`ll probably be safe with the more ornate and larger types of crown molding. These types of molding can be curvier and have elaborate designs carved into them or at the corner joints.

If your choice is more modern and contemporary, you can still have crown molding, but it just has to be a little more subdued. A more modern look includes smaller molding and sharp, clean lines. An ornate and carved molding would look out of place in a more modern room.

Size

People tend to believe that they have to have the same style of molding throughout the house, but this isn`t exactly true. While the molding should be similar, you also have to account for the size of the room. A larger room is fine with any type of molding, but smaller rooms can easily be overwhelmed by large ornate designs.

A large molding in a small room makes it feel even more cramped and gives the illusion of less space. Instead, choose a molding that complements the size of the room. For example, if the moldings in the larger rooms have a four-tiered design, the smaller rooms can have two or three tier. You still get the same style, but there is less of it.

Ceiling Height

Older homes tended to have higher ceilings, so when it came to molding anything was fine. As time went on and people began to value space, ceiling height dropped from 10 or 12 feet to 7 or 9 feet. If the room is large, but the ceiling height is short, consider a molding that projects more across the ceiling than the side of the wall.

You can still have the large ornate and elaborate molding, but draw attention away from the walls and therefore, the space between the floor and the ceilings. Molding that is projected more along the ceiling will make the ceiling look higher.

Your Style

Perhaps the most important aspect of choosing crown molding is your own personal style. If you tend to be more austere, you can choose a simple, clean look for any room in the home. The same can be true for the more ornate molding. If you prefer a grander look, you can find a style that fits your taste and looks great in the room. Crown molding goes well with many styles and accents including traditional, Pocket door hardware.

Quite often my House painting Mississauga customers are deliberating about what to do with their floors, and obviously a carpeting solution sometimes works the best. I have compiled some thoughts on home carpeting decisions and factors. Hopefully this can help you clarify your thoughts.

Carpets, things to consider when you’re thinking about carpeting your home. You should go with your instincts and gut feeling, the color of the carpet is more important than the design to some respect

Consider whether you want your carpet to be a focal point of the room or just blend in.

If possible choose your carpet before deciding upon paint upholstery or curtains. The colors in your carpet can provide inspiration for the color scheme of an entire room.

Before making a decision about carpets, make about whether dirt is effective. You have small children or dogs? To entertain a lot? More pattern can help you hide daily wear and tear.

If your room has lots of pattern and texture, a generally best to choose a single color floor covering here you might choose a color from a cushion or a curtain.

If you try to find a carpet that will work with fabric and colors already in place, consider custom designed. It’s not necessarily much more expensive than off the rack, and you will have a unique perfectly nice piece.

Runners on stairs can introduce color and texture to the bland environment of a hall or staircase.

Offices don’t have to have wall-to-wall industrial carpeting. An interesting rug that you like looking at can make a better place.

Children love color, so don’t be afraid of using it in their rooms. Choose a carpet that is soft and comfortable to sit on, because they tend to really use the floor when playing.

If you don’t want a pattern in your rug but you still like texture look considered natural yarn that takes die unevenly. Another thing to do is look at carpets that leave fabric knots looped, or uncut, which will add some lobster or texture.

There are portable bookshelves and bookcases that you can move around the room and put them and situate them in the most appropriate spot for both aesthetics and ease of use and practicality. Sometimes these movable bookshelves don’t suit your needs.

Custom-made bookshelves might be what you’re looking for. You can custom design this bookshelf to fit the looks of your room. Bookshelves are not only for books, you can also place all kinds of other articles on the shelves such as decorative things like vase’s and candles, statuettes, containers and ornamental boxes and so on.

Bookshelves can be custom-made to be adjustable to fit different types of objects, the shelves can be supported by pins or dowels or hidden brackets. The wood can be either painted or stained and varnished. Depending on your design and your needs this bookshelf can be a single row or a series combination of rows basically creating a wall unit.

As we transition into September and life begins to move back indoors, we need to start thinking about packing up and storing our deck and patio furniture for next year. Proper cleaning, maintenance and storage will add years to the life of outdoor furnishings. A little maintenance now will save both money and time down the road.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Wrought iron: While many newer outdoor living room furnishings are rust-proof, most vintage patio sets are made from wrought iron and other rust-prone metals that require regular work to reduce the onslaught of rust. Each year at the end of the summer, clean the furnishings with a mild detergent and water and let dry. Small rust patches can be sanded, primed and repainted with matching paints. If there are larger rusted areas, it will be necessary to fully strip and re-paint your pieces. It’s important to handle this task at the end of the summer as storage in damp places such as basements or garden sheds will only result in more rust over the winter.

Rust-proof materials: Powder coated, rust-proof furnishings should be washed with a mild detergent and allowed to fully dry. Use a small, soft brush to clean out corners of residual pollen, dirt and dead insects. Inspect for nicks or deep scratches in the metal parts and touch up as needed.

Plastic and resin outdoor furniture: Plastic, resin and other outdoor materials require simply a mild detergent wash and brushing before storage.

Glass tabletops: Glass tops of tables should be cleaned and stored upright in a safe location, preferably in a large flat box.

Wicker and rattan: Wicker, rattan and other natural materials need constant inspection for wrapped bands that may be coming loose and other breaks in the material. Some damage may need professional repair, but regular maintenance will keep this to a minimum. Clean each piece with a brush to remove dirt and other debris and clean stains and other food spills with a damp cloth. Avoid over soaking and allow to dry fully out in the sunlight.

Teak furniture: Teak furniture requires a mild detergent and water cleansing on a sunny day so that the water will dry completely. Do not treat with teak oil as it will attract dust.

Outdoor fabrics and upholstery: There are amazing indoor/outdoor fabrics these days, but while they hold up well to many weather conditions, they do still require some care.

1. Brush out any debris, particularly food crumbs, from corners and zipper closures. Mice and other pests will be attracted to any foodstuffs leftover and can eat their way through the fabric looking for it.

2. Use a damp cloth and light detergent to clean the upholstery of spills or stains and allow to dry out in the sun. If there are stubborn stains, try to remove the cushion cover from the inside pillow before immersing in water. Always make sure the inside is dry before storing.

3. If you have any minor spots of mildew, spray the upholstery with vinegar and let dry in the sun. Bigger mildew problems can be handled by soaking the fabric (without cushion inserts) in a bleach and mild detergent solution, rinsing well and leaving outside to air dry.

Storing Outdoor Furnishings for the Winter

A clean, dry basement or storage shed is the best way to store furniture over the winter. If your basement or shed is prone to be dusty, throw some old sheeting over your furniture loosely to keep it clean. Whenever possible, do not tightly wrap up furnishings in airtight containers as this can trap moisture in and promote mildew.

If it is not possible to store all your furniture indoors, invest in good quality, outdoor heavy-duty storage bins that are waterproof yet still allow a certain amount of airflow. Similarly, heavy plastic furniture covers are available, but are more prone to mildew growth and puddle accumulation in rainstorms. Make sure furniture is tightly secured together and stored in a low-wind spot near the home. Take advantage of warmer winter days to unwrap and inspect furnishing to make sure there is no unwanted water or pests collecting under the plastic.

Taking care of these small things will pay off big when it comes to longevity of your outdoor furnishings.

Power tools are the most important part of any handyman’s arsenal. Most tools come in different shapes and sizes even though they do the same thing. So don’t get fooled by some high tech looking tool that still does the basic thing you’re looking to have done. Sometimes all those bells and whistles at up to troubles. A lot of manufacturers make the tools look so high-tech you get excited to buy it meanwhile you could’ve bought a tool that does the exact the same thing for quarter the price.

Some basic important aspects of any tool should be its reliability first of all. Before buying a tool it’s always smart to do a little research into that particular tool, usually what I do is I put in the name of whatever I’m thinking about buying and then beside that I put “review” so in other words say for example I have “drill” I want to buy, I would put in the drills “name” and beside that I would put in the word “review”… “Drill review” and this will get you some answers. (Replace the word drill though with the name the drill). So for example if I want to know something about Mikita drills that I would type in the browser “Mikita drill review”. The word review attached to the end of any name will result in reviews or comments on whatever it is that you typed in.

Another way to find out the quality of the tool is by phoning and talking to power tool repair shops. They will probably have some comments on tools that have been brought in for repairs. If the tool repair man says that particular type of drill comes in often for repairs maybe that’s not the one to get. But he might suggest a good tool for you.

Other source for finding out if a particular power tool is good or bad is by going to “Consumer Reports” where you’ll get the lowdown on a particular tool.

If you’re looking for good quality professional grade power tools like Mississauga contractors use your better off going to a commercial tool retailers and wholesalers where there is a selection of professional grade power tools. These tools are more pricey but you’re paying for quality and longevity of use.

Handyman of Mississauga as some call me.

(Hollywood painting) can also help with home decor ideas giving you more from this existing room plan which might include a better storage area, more accessibility to different features, better lighting and warmer more comfortable living space.

How to finish the basement is one of our specialties, these are internal additions to your home at a lesser cost than adding a external structure.

Of course probably one of the most simplistic ways of creating a basement room would be just simply insulating and drywalling the perimeter walls in the basement to start with.

1st you have to attach furring strips to your concrete or block walls. Furring strips are 1″ x 2″ shape strips of wood. And these will create the support of the drywall.Depending on what you want to line the walls with, example drywall you should put the strips up every 16 inches from center to center so that the drywall will go up evenly.

****

Fastening the strips can be done is a few different types of fasteners most commonly I use “tapcon concrete screws”, these are blue anodized looking screws that will screw firmly into concrete or block, you 1st have to pre-drill to accommodate the screw.

There are also sleeve anchor type fasteners but these are more cumbersome to use. Here you’re drilling larger hole than the screw that you are using to fit a sleeve in which the screw will go. After you finish drilling a hole then you have to tap the sleeve into the hole this is an overkill for this type of situation.

To start: place your furring strips on the concrete wall determine where are you going to put the strips, mark the spots .

As I mentioned previously the markings should be 16 inches apart from each other.

Tapcon Concrete Screw

Place the 1st furring strip in position and drill your hole close to the very top of the strip making sure that the furring strip is lined up with your mark.

Tech Tip:
1/4″ dia. Tapcons use a 3/16″ bit and 3/16″ dia. Tapcons use a 5/32″ bit.also don’t put all your screws straight down the line this will cause the wood to spit.

Next I take a level to make sure that the strip is perfectly level ,mark that spot.

Drill the 2nd hole holding the furring strip tight to the wall.

Now insert the 2nd screw.

Now that you know that your 1st furry strip is perfect and you know that you want to place the strips every 16 inches apart from each other you can cut a piece of wood (spacer template) to put between the remaining furring strips all the way around the room.

Additions can add value to your home. There are different types of additions, the one where you imagine putting on some additional parts to the outside of a house creating more inner space. And the other form of additions is to convert a space in your existing home and add bedrooms or family rooms. You might have an empty basement and you can create a rec room (recreational room). This room might include a large party area with a bar and a basement washroom.

Blocked sinks are usually caused by an accumulation of hair, oil or other dirt stuck someplace nearby the drain. Act quickly when a drain empties more slowly than normal and you will prevent calling a plumbing engineer because of a total blockage, that can be significantly tougher to get rid of.

In the event of a slow drain or perhaps a total block, first of all empty the sink. Pour in liberal amounts of boiling water. This could break up the clog. Do not use this approach on plastic material plumbing.

Get rid of the drain stopper or strainer. Many wash basins have got pop-up stoppers which can be removed just by pulling them up. On some designs you will need to reach under the basin and eliminate a nut which retains the pull control. Plug up the overflow opening using a wet towel or have somebody keep his hand securely against it. This prevents air from being drawn in or water expelled when you plunge.

Run an inch or two of water to the sink. Or bail out the backed-up water leaving an inch or two. The water should just cover the plunger cup. Now position the cup over the drain and force downwards, slanting the cup as you do to eliminate trapped air. Powerfully pump the plunger up and down approximately 10 times to produce a rise in the water trapped in the drain.

Lift the plunger sharply up from the water on the last upstroke. In case the water rushes out, you have dislodged the congestion. Run water to the sink. If it does not go down easily, repeat the process.

Often called plumbers snake, a sink auger comprises of a length of hard wire cable with a screw-like coil of spring at one end and a moving crank that allows you to turn the wire. Insert the snake into the drain opening and crank it clockwise and slowly downward through the trap underneath the sink up to the point it breaks through the stoppage. Try not to press the congestion. Attempt to lift it or shatter it up. It is easy to discern between the soft opposition of a blockage and the tough resistance of a curve in the water pipe.

Position a bucket under the U-shaped trap under the sink. Unscrew the cleanout plug at the base of the trap by using a wrench and let the water go out. Clear the stoppage by hand or using a twisted wire coat hanger. Replace the plug. If there’s no cleanout plug, get rid of the complete trap, which is retained by 2 combining nuts.

Take away the higher coupling nut using a water pipe wrench. Next sustain the trap and eliminate the lower coupling nut. Clean out the stoppage and replace the trap. Don’t over-tighten the fittings, or they might leak.

Chemical type drain openers might be efficient, but they’re harmful. Adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions precisely. If you get any treated water on yourself, clean it off without delay with cool water.

What is a handyman, handyman is a guy who will be able to do some of this plumbing work. Sometimes it’s pretty easy but other times you might need to use of a real plumber because he might have the special tools that you might not have.

Galvanized pipes, or iron pipes coated with zinc were fitted in houses more than a couple of decades back. However, because rust starts eating through these pipes, you need will need to start changing them to avoid a hefty bill to your plumber. If you’re considering repiping, one of the best options you can choose for your home is copper repiping.

Copper repiping is the process of replacing galvanized pipes with copper ones.Dropping of water pressure is a significant sign that tells you that this change is to be considered in most cases. That can be very annoying, especially when you’re trying to enjoy a nice warm shower, but only receive a faint drizzle of water.

One more motive for house owners to consider repiping their houses with copper is when they receive brown and smelly water on turning on their faucets. This clearly indicates that your pipes are corroded and need replacement. You need to call in a plumber at the earliest and have him install copper pipes if you don’t want to deal with leaky pipes, and avoid the smell of rust throughout your home.

All this talk about copper must have gotten you intrigued. You would definitely be having doubts as to why the reddish metal should be chosen in spite of the high cost involved.Well, here are some of the benefits of implementing copper repiping rather than choosing any other material:

-Copper can last longer than iron. So, unless you plan on living elsewhere after 5-10 years, make sure to invest in copper pipes.

-The metal is light in weight, safe and very durable, which makes copper perfect for interior pipes.

-Copper is not susceptible to rust. Copper will indeed last for a long time to come, so you can stop thinking about changing your pipes for quite a few years,

-Plumbers like copper for bending and using it within the walls owing to the high flexibility it offers.

Now that you know the benefits of copper repiping, it is important to understand the most essential determinant the cost. Costs may vary depending upon the labour method employed and the basic requirements. The number of drains your house possesses, the overall dimensions of your home, and also the inherent complexity that the existing piping system within your home carries would possibly determine the costs involved. You would probably have to part with a few thousands on an average if you decide to repipe your entire home.

Yet, that price will eventually pay up because you will be spared from future repairs.Copper repiping will increase the pricing of your house if you ever think of selling it.However, to make sure that you’re getting the best deal, call different plumbing service providers and ask whether they can visit your house to give you an estimate. Most plumbers offer this service for free, thus you can ask them to drop by.This helps you decide the plumber who can do the job for you at the least price.

So, the next time you feel something’s amiss in your plumbing, quickly call an expert copper repiping plumber and get him to assess the damage.
